What Is The Most Important Job?

What is the most important job in the world and before you say President of the United States, think again and then think of the job that many of you hold and that is being a parent.  It is the most underpaid job out there.  The hours are lousy.  The pay is below minimum wage and there are no unions to go to bat for us to get us better working conditions and fewer hours. We are kind of flying solo on this one.

I love being a Mom and would not change it for the world but it does come with such a huge responsibility.
I now have to teach this child to be a courteous, well-behaved and normal citizen and that is a tall order in my book. When I first had, the job bestowed on me there was no manual to say if I was doing it correctly. It is like being on a tightrope and balancing to not fall off.  It’s the same thing we do with our children we hope we are doing everything correctly and it is a balancing act daily to not only handle our own life but now you are handling theirs which is daunting at times.

When you are holding that baby for the first time and you look at that mirror image, gazing back at you it is a little scary to say the least. My first reaction was fear mainly.  I was this baby’s whole world.  Kind of reminded me of imprinting where the goslings imprint the first thing they see. The next thing I knew for sure was there really was a God and he had given me the most important job I will ever have in a lifetime. To know God and I created this baby was miraculous.  What was staggering was that this child was mine and by far surpassed anything I had ever created in my life. After the initial shock wore off, I just thought of the enormous undertaking and knowing this baby was going to look to me for all the answers, which was overwhelming. This is one job where I have to be the best that I can be. Unbelievably, a sense of calm came over me to know that I was this baby’s lifeline in a sense and knowing that there was so much love that I felt for my child.

I started out wanting a career and tried that route but then I became a Mom and that all changed.  It is intimidating to be in charge and have to mold this child into something to be proud of.  When you are not with your child and he or she says Thank you to someone and that someone mentions how polite your child is your heart sings.  You are so proud.  When your children know how to share and get along with other kids and not act like a bully that is another proud moment. These are just a few of those proud moments to come.
I believe that being a Mom is the hardest job in the world. We as Moms never get the credit that is due us but then we don’t need the kudos to make us know we are doing a great job.  For me to see my child laugh, smile and be happy is all the kudos I need to know I am doing one heck of a job.

Sometimes, it is hard to have to put someone before me at all times and there is no Me time, is there?  I don’t have an identity anymore. Talk about identity theft? That was stolen long ago when I began having children. To have another moniker as somebody’s Mom and know this will be your new identity for years to come is something you never give any thought to at least I never did.  I do have to wonder every once in awhile who am I and who was I?  Let’s face it our lives are not our own and it’s all about them which is rightly so. It is a lot to ponder but I would not trade my job for all the money in the world. This is a favorite quote of mine that captures what a mother is….“Mother: the most beautiful word on the lips of mankind” by Kahlil Gibran

English press 1 ~ Spanish press 2

This is food for thought and I wanted to see all the different opinions out there.  We all know why there is an emphasis on learning to speak Spanish.  The Spanish/Hispanic population, illegal or legal is growing by leaps and bounds. It seems as if Spanish is spoken at every fast food location, landscaping business, cleaning services etc.  By no means am I trying to profile this ethnic group but it is a fact that the socio-economic makeup of this ethnic group attracts these types of jobs. Things are changing and hopefully this will not remain stereotypical. We have a communication problem. We cannot understand one another it has gotten to the point that when using ATM’s and telephones you are asked whether you want to use Spanish or English. Experts say the answer to the communication problem is education and I agree. I also feel education is the answer to most any problem.  In my community, there is a move to provide bilingual education and this maybe the answer to bridging the communication gap. However, one concern by many is why are English speaking Americans learning Spanish?  The illiteracy rate in this country is staggering and many feel that learning English is more important than learning Spanish.  I have learned from a source, a Spanish teacher that if you were to move to a Spanish speaking country and enter their education system you would not be offered a bilingual program.  Another concern by many is if you speak Spanish and you come to this country why not learn English and why should Americans learn Spanish?
What do you think?
